David J
Williams, Sr
January 8, 1943 – June 9, 2024
David J. WIlliams Sr., affectionately known as "Pops" "Uncle Dave" and "Papa David", entered eternal rest on June 9, 2024, at the age of 81, at his home. He retired as a Master Sergent in the U.S. Army after 22 years of service and USPS mail handler after 23 years of service.
Mr. Williams attended Albany High School where he received a scholarship to attend HBCU University of Maryland East Shore for football. While attending UMES, he was drafted to Vietnam to serve his country. Mr. WIlliams was the only survivor of his platoon after the Vietnam War.
Even though he was a man of few words as well as a humble man, Mr. Williams was a dedicated soldier. He received the silver and bronze star. He was a 1st sergeant of the 759th MPs on Ft. Dix, New Jersey. He also received the Vietnam service medal, Vietnam civil action medal, Vietnam campaign medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Combat Infantry Badge of Honor. He served his country overseas in Vietnam, Korea and Germany.
In his spare time, he would hang out at the Veterans of Foreign Wars in New Jersey where he was a member. His other hobbies included fishing, westerns, toy train collector, pinochle, and Pecans. He loved his Brooklyn Dodgers, but nothing compared to the love he had for his Dallas Cowboys.
David is predeceased by his parents Mary Louise Williams and TJ Washington; his wife of 51 years Joan WIlliams; his in laws Vera and Dankus Fleeks; daughter Mary Paulette Williams and Connie Ann Stewart; sister Paulette Lampkin Williams, son Elbert Wayne Stewart and grandson DesJon Jron Williams. He leaves behind two sister in laws Eula McCowan, Texas; Sherrill Stroud, Georgia; one brother in law Bernard Johnson, Oklahoma; his children David J (Keisha) Williams Jr.; Marvin (Ann) Stewart, New Jersey, James Stewart, Maryland; Darnishia (Joseph) Howard, Tolitha Williams, Kevin Stewart, Tanisha (Stan) Howard, Ondra Colbert, Kjell (Lashunna) Sealy, Georgia; Kenya (Shanna) Walter, London, 29 grandkids, 42 great grandkids, 1 great great grandchild, niece Jacqueline Berry, nephews Juelz "Pookie" Lampkin, Ralph Sheldon, Kevin Willams, and a host of other nieces, nephews, family and friends.
To end on a lighter note, he did have a favorite saying. Anytime you would ask him "Do you want ice cream" or "Do you want a Pepsi" he would always respond "Is the pope catholic"
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June15, 2024 at Mt. Transfiguration Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence D. Hill officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. Viewing will be held from 2:00 PM until 5:30 PM Friday at the funeral home.
