THOMAS (Tom) HENRY JOHNSON Sr., entered into rest on June 24, 2023. He was born October 24, 1940 to the late Tommie Johnson and Thelma Knight Johnson at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia and grew up in North Augusta, South Carolina. Tom was a 1959 graduate of Jefferson High School. After high school, Tom attended South Carolina State College.Shortly after college, he was employed by Savannah River Nuclear Site as an Assistant Project Manager. Due to his love for his country, he then decided to join the United States Navy and also served in the Vietnam War.While in the Navy, he was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii and Long Beach, California.
After four years of service, he received an honorable discharge. Tom's employment history includes Savannah River Nuclear Site (SRS), where he was employed for 36 years and also retired. While at SRS working in numerous capacities, his leadership abilities and strong work ethic were recognized. Tom's love for helping people and his entrepreneurial spirit lead to him owning his own janitorial service and acquiring his real estate license and becoming a Realtor for over 25 years for Better Homes and Garden Realty, Meybolm Realty, Blanchard and Calhoun Realty, Veteran's Realty,Century 21,Nordahl Realty and Bernard Johnson Realty Company.
He became a man of tremendous faith as a result of his introduction to the love of Jesus Christ at Second Providence Baptist Church, in North Augusta, SC where he was baptized as an adolescent.
Tom was a cherished light in the lives of his family.A religious man, he loved fiercely, quailed for nothing, and believed forcefully in the importance of possessing a strong work ethic.His Legacy was to "Always try to make a mark on the world that makes you and everyone that you come across better."
Tom is survived by: the love of his life, his "Guardian Angel" and dedicated wife of 59 years, Helen Hudson Johnson of Augusta, Georgia; his two sons, Thomas (Dorothy) H. Johnson, Jr. of Augusta, Georgia and Michael R. Johnson of Evans, Georgia; daughter and twin sister to Michael, Michele Johnson Cardwell of Evans, Georgia; his sister Elizabeth (Ronald) Ray of North Augusta, South Carolina; his brother Wendell (Kelly) Johnson of Conyers, Georgia; his sister-in-law, Juliana (Bernard) Johnson of North Augusta, South Carolina; his five grandchildren, Devin J. Johnson of New York, New York, Autumn R. Johnson of Atlanta, Georgia, Duvall F. Cardwell, II of Evans, Georgia, Dylan Thomas Cardwell of Auburn, Alabama, Drake H. Cardwell of Kennesaw, Georgia; and a host of very special and loved nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, July 1, 2023, at Second Providence Baptist Church, 1202 Old Edgefield Road, North Augusta, South Carolina 29841 with Rev. Dr. Albert M. James as the eulogist.
The burial and military honors will be at Walker Memorial Park at 611 Laney Walker Boulevard Extension, Augusta, Georgia 30901.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 30, 2023, at G.L. Brightharp & Sons Mortuary at 614 West Ave, North Augusta, South Carolina 29841.
Professional Services are under the care of G. L. Brightharp & Sons Mortuary-North Augusta.
