Betty Jean (Dunton) Whetsell

It is with deep and profound sympathy that we announce the transition of Mrs. Betty J. Whetsell who entered into rest September 8, 2021 at her residence.

Betty Jean Whetsell, affectionately known as "Jean" was the daughter of Thomas Dunton and Ethel Mae Quarles Dunton. She was born July 9, 1952 in Edgefield, SC..

At an early age, she joined Bethlehem Baptist Church. She was a 1970 graduate of Columbia High School.  After graduation, Jean attended the University of South Carolina.  She was a devoted employee of Westinghouse Electric Company for over 30 years.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Larry David Dunton.

She leaves to cherish her memories a son, Vonman L. Whetsell of Blythewood, SC; a grandson, Marcus L. Whetsell of Los Angeles, CA; a granddaughter, Shaniya L. Whetsell of Columbia, SC; seven aunts, Ella D. Bates of Dallas, TX, JoAnne Jones of North Augusta, SC, Barbara D. Washington of Edgefield, SC, Carolyn Simpkins of North Augusta, SC, Gloria J. (George) Griffin of Charlotte, NC, Elaine (Maurice) Thomas, and Doris (Luther) Tanks of Charlotte, NC; three uncles, Julian (Vernice) Dunton of Fayetteville, NC, James (Patricia) Lee of North Augusta, SC, and Clifford Quarles of North Augusta, SC; a devoted first cousin, Herbert Mathis, whom she thought of as her brother; her honorary nephew and caregiver, Martin Glover of Columbia, SC; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, September 17, 2021 at G. L. Brightharp & Sons Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Eldwin Griffin officiating.  Masks and Social Distancing will be observed.  Viewing will be held from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM Friday prior to the service.
